Railways rehabilitation gets underway: eviction concerns remain

With two loans from ADB, Aus Aid and others totalling  over $140 million the contract, won by Australian firm Toll Holdings, is beginning to take off. ‘The project is basically to rehabilitate this railway so that it can run at speeds of 50,60 km/h.. but it’s not going to be world class by any stretch of the imagination’ commented Paul Power from Canadian firm CANARAIL (quote from the Cambodia Daily). The ADB has produced guidelines on resettlement of affected families living along the railway but there remain many questions about how the families have been identified and how they will be compensated.
