Debate Competition Program under the theme: “Land Rights and Adequate Housing”

The Community Youth Leadership Program of Sahmakum Teang Tnuat Organization organized the 3rd season of the debate competition, aiming to provide young people with the opportunity to directly engage in discussions on human rights, urban development, and environmental issues in Cambodia. The goal is to promote dialogue and debates on these topics to raise awareness of key issues, propose solutions, and encourage transparent, peaceful, and just development processes.

A total of 120 participants joined the program (including 45 females and 2 monk students), comprising community youth from urban areas, and students from various schools and universities. Among debater group, 16 candidates (including 8 females and 2 monk students) were selected to compete in 8 teams across four rounds of competition: video discussion round, preliminary debate round, semi-final debate round and final debate round.

As a result of the final round held on April 27, 2025, the program identified the top four finalist teams who competed for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place titles under the two following debate topics:

  1.  Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Cambodia
  2. Does economic growth result from the presence of foreign direct investment, or is it influenced by other factors?

2nd place: Team Youth 21

3rd place: Team Light of Justice

✨4th place: Team Voice of Youth

✨Honorable Mentions (5th place from the preliminary round): Power Path Team, Nitek Krom Team, Youth of Stars Team and Sach Chak Sophea Team.

Among the 17 teams that applied to participate in the video discussion round on the topic “Inclusive development” the judging committee scored and selected entries based on the following criteria: the understanding of the topic, explanation, confidence during discussion, creativity, and video requirement.

As a result, 8 teams were selected to advance to the preliminary debate round. The selected teams are:

Double-D team, Youth of Stars team, Power Path team, Nitek Krom team, Youth 21 team, Light of Justice team, voice of Youth and Sach Chak Sophea team.

The preliminary round of the debate competition was organized under the topic: “Climate Change as a Human Rights Issue.”

Eight teams participated in this round to present their arguments and engage in debate. As a result, Congratulations to the four teams that advanced to the semi-final round:

  • Light of Justice

The semi-final round of the debate competition was organized under the topic:

“Is Eviction for Urban Development Justifiable or Not?”

Four finalist teams participated in this round to present their arguments.

 Results:

  • Double-D and Youth 21 advanced to compete for 1st and 2nd place in the final round.
  • Voice of Youth and Light of Justice were set to compete for 3rd and 4th place.
